Recently a statement was made that Oncology Esthetics is “common sense” and therefore training was not necessary.
One would think Oncology Esthetics would be common sense, however, unless a esthetician has been diagnosed with cancer; or they have been a caregiver, it is hard to consider them an expert in the area of cancer. While therapists may be ‘experts’ in skin care, it doesn’t make them an expert in Oncology Esthetics. The world of cancer is complicated – many different kinds of cancer and treatment including a multitude of medication. Things are also rapidly advancing and changing.
While ISFOE is open to suggestions to improve the content in our curriculum requirements, we will continue to obtain information regarding the disease and side effects from published clinical studies. As a very qualified RN stated recently – what do estheticians know about drugs and side effects?
